Donald John "Potch" Valiska

June 22, 1935 — December 10, 2020

Donald J. “Potch” Valiska, 85, Mosinee, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

He was born June 22, 1935, in Mosinee, the son of the late Charles and Mary (Unertl) Valiska Sr. On September 10, 1960, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Mosinee, he married the love of his life, Marian Radtke. She preceded him in death on October 12, 1992. They raised 3 daughters. Donald cherished his daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with pride and an abundance of love.

He was a 1953 graduate of Mosinee High School. He was employed for 44 years at Mosinee Paper Corporation, most of his career as a chemical lab technician.

He enjoyed many hobbies, including playing golf, puzzle building, crosswords, word search, reading, selling tickets at local sports, watching football, coaching softball, playing darts and horseshoes with friends, playing cards and gardening.

He was a charter member of Indianhead Golf and Recreation, Inc, an usher and member of St Paul's Catholic Church in Mosinee and the Knights of Columbus - 2nd degree in Council 5488.

Donald enjoyed camping and resort vacations when his daughters were young (he took a lot of fish off the lines for three little girls!) and bus trips with Marian and his siblings later in life. When his daughters were older, he enjoyed travelling to his daughters’ homes, and vacationing with them and their families. He was a kind and selfless father who taught his daughters a strong work ethic and the power of laughter. His grandchildren remember the entertaining, funny games and puzzles when they visited with him.

Survivors include his children, Barbara (John) Trabert, New Franken, Julie (Edward) Aumann, Hartford, and Beth (John) Strauss, Oregon, Wis.; grandchildren, Aleksey, Kristina, and Aleksandr “Sasha” Trabert, and Michael (Bianca Jurewicz) Aumann and Maggie Aumann; great-grandchildren, Devin, Elijah, and Zoey Trabert and Bright Knighton; a brother, James (Nina) Valiska, Mosinee; and two sisters, Judy Valiska and Linda Valiska, both of Schofield. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Valiska, three brothers, Charles, Norman and Robert, a sister, Dorothy Krause, and a Goddaughter, Karen Krause Warosh.

Private family services will be held. Beste Funeral Home, Mosinee, assisted the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.bestefh.com A Memorial Mass will be held at a future date.

The family suggests that memorials in Donald’s honor may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
