Gene Stuart Thanig

August 28, 1945 — November 23, 2022

Gene S Thanig, 77, Mosinee, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022, at his home with his family by his side.

He was born Aug. 28, 1945, in Wausau, WI, the son of the late Glen and Frances (Nechuta) Thanig. He graduated from Mosinee High School in 1963. He married his high school sweetheart Pamela “Penny” Cisler on July 3, 1965, at St. John Lutheran Church, Mosinee, she survives.

After graduation, Gene was employed at Marathon Millworks. He then went on to work full-time for Mosinee Papermill in 1964 retiring in 2010. In 1968 Gene and Penny purchased their farm in the Town of Mosinee where they farmed full-time as a family. Upon his retirement, his son John took over the family farm. Besides farming, he enjoyed hunting, repairing farm equipment, bird watching, spending time with family, friends, and especially his four granddaughters. Gene was a good storyteller, often reminiscing about the good ole days, complete with actions and sounds effects. He often loved telling a good joke or playing a harmless prank. He could most often be found sitting outside on his lawn chair with the family dogs, especially his little buddies Dixie and Ruby.

Gene will be remembered best for being a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, for his love of farming, and his strong faith in God. He will be deeply missed by his wife and family.
