Robert "Mickey" Grassl

d. June 7, 2026

Robert “Mickey” Grassl, 89 of Mosinee, WI was called to rest June 7th, 2026. He was born in July of 1936 to the late Robert and Lula (Krieg) Grassl.

In his teens Mickey was a valuable member of the Mosinee High School hockey team, Mosinee Papermakers, as well as an exceptional boxer. After joining the Air Force, Mickey and his wife, Nancy (Sparhawk), married in November of 1958. Nancy followed Mickey during his time in the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic; they welcomed their first son while Mickey was stationed in Florida. The couple returned to their roots in Mosinee, where their family continued to grow, raising 6 children (having lost 1 son during infancy). Mickey baptized many of his children at Saint Francis Xavier, where he ushered and attended service with unwavering faith. In his early days as a father, Mickey worked both at the Mosinee Papermill and as a school bus driver, while also remaining active with the Air Force during drill weekends. Mickey began his career at the Mosinee Papermill as a Spare Hand; he later received education and on-site training to become an electrician. As an electrician, he was known for practical innovations and strong work ethics. Mickey dedicated nearly 45 years to the Mosinee Papermill before retiring in 2008. Throughout his life Mickey enjoyed many hobbies including watching football (cheering for the Packers), downhill skiing, and biking. He also enjoyed traveling and made several trips out of state and locally within Wisconsin to visit or support his family.

At home, Mickey’s family knew him to be loving and compassionate. He was soft-spoken, but his actions spoke volumes. Mickey’s family felt his love for them when he meticulously cared for their cars by brushing them free of snow or cleaned their windshields before he hugged them goodbye and said, “watch your step.” At family gatherings, an empty plate in your hand was an opportunity for Mickey to offer you more food and he always had a beer or a cup of coffee to share. Animals and people flocked to Mickey. It was common to find Mickey on the floor among the grandchildren and their toys or surrounded by family pets. He took exceptional pride in buying 40-pounds of bird seed at a time, guiding their family cats and dogs into or out of the house or coaxing frogs and toads out of their driveway to keep them safe.

Mickey’s life was a life of kindness and service. He served his country in the Air Force, his church as an usher, and his family as a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle, for which he will be missed dearly. Mickey is survived by his wife of 67 years, Nancy (Sparhawk); his sister, Joyce Creske; his children, George (Sandy) Grassl, Cathy (Jeff) Walker, Cheryl (Eric) Barszcz, Pam Asmundsen, Heidi Bloomer, Joe (Laura) Grassl, and his niece, Debbie (Doug) Bemowski. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Mickey was preceded in death by his brother, John “Jack” Grassl, two sisters, Virjean Grzadzielewski, Gloria Dinon, and infant son, Andy Grassl.

Mickey will be honored by brief visitation and service both at Beste Funeral home, Mosinee, on June 12th, 2026. Visitation begins at 10:00am, with service following at 11:00am. The Rev. Aaron Becker will officiate. Guests are welcome to join the family at 12:30pm at the Knowlton Townhall for lunch at the completion of service.
