Mosinee

Norman R. Layher, 65, of Mosinee, passed away suddenly, on Monday, January 26, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at Marshfield Hospital, Marshfield.

Norman was born on May 22, 1960, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Son of the late Bert and Anita (Ross) Layher. He married Candice Huempfner on July 14, 1978, in Rhinelander, WI, they celebrated 48 years of marriage, she survives.

Norm, also known as “Stormin Norman” or “Crazy Canuck” loved nothing better than taking off with his wife Candy for fishing trips, whether fishing northern lakes or staying close to home. Norm also had a love for cooking and was incredibly good at it. He loved cooking for his family, his in-laws Gary and Onie Huempfner being his favorite guests. He taught traditional family recipes to his children (except Heather because she hates cooking, which annoyed Norm) and grandchildren. Norm was always learning something new from crafting his own knives, hydroponic gardening, and sausage making. Norm also loved taking his yearly trips to Winnipeg to spend time with his brothers Ron and Brian. A lot of us in town benefited from these trips with the 100 loaves of Canadian Rye bread he would bring back and handout. Norm had a hard exterior but loved his wife, kids, and grandkids deeply, and now we will learn to walk through this world with a new, permanent emptiness.

Norman is survived by love of his life, Candy, Mosinee; children, Amy Diaz, Shawano; Heather (Russell) Simonis, Mosinee; Travis Layher, Clintonville; grandchildren, Gavin Wilke, Kendra Diaz, Taylor Layher, Kevin Diaz, Hanna Layher, Drake Wilke, Evan Wilke, Noah Layher, Ella Layher, Charley Layher ; great-grandchild, due this June; siblings whom he will be deeply missed by Ron Layher, and Brian Layher, St. Laurent, MB; special friends; Henry (Mary) Moeschler; Randy (Sally) Haupt and many others as Norm was a social butterfly.

Our family would like to give our sincerest appreciation and gratitude to the Marshfield Hospital, Marshfield, for their kindness and love shown by the staff, to our mother and father during this traumatic event. We would also like to thank UW Organ and Tissue Donation, Madison WI, for their comfort and care as Norm saved a life through organ donation.

Per Norman’s wishes, a Celebration of Life, will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, from noon until 3:00 p.m., at Pit Stop Bar and Grill in Mosinee.
