James “Jim” D. Kohnhorst, 77, of Mosinee died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 23, 1946, in Wausau, the son of the late Douglas and Jean (Schabell) Kohnhorst. On Jan. 3, 1970, he married Jean Tryba at St. Paul Catholic Church, she survives.

Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army, a Vietnam War Veteran, serving from 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1969. Jim was employed at Weyerhaeuser Paper Mill for 35 years, greatly enjoying retirement after his work career.

Jim was an active outdoors man, whether he was in pursuit of a big buck, a flock of ducks, or walleye in the lakes. He loved sharing all of his hunting and fishing stories with anyone who would listen. Jim always made time for his family. He taught his daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren all his knowledge of the outdoors. He also enjoyed camping trips with his wife Jean. They frequently traveled to various states with friends and family. Every Monday Jim and his wife Jean enjoyed going to Coffee Clutch to spend time with friends while sharing stories and baked goods. Those who were close to Jim knew he could not pass up his sweets, especially apple pie and ice cream. Jim was also an avid gardener and spent countless hours tending to his flowers and vegetables.

Jim is survived by his wife, Jean; daughters, Lisa (Paul) Matis, Eagle River, Pamela (Robert) Busko, Marathon City, and Dawn (David) Sweeney, Auburndale; grandchildren, Ashley (Brandon) Raikowski, Tyler (Ashley) Busko, Sarah (Ryan) Brewster, and Gannon Sweeney; great-grandchildren, Easton, Jackson, Karley, and Addilynn.
