Rodney Paul "Rod" Huber

Rodney P. Huber, 87, Weston, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017, at his home.

He was born June 9, 1930, in Kronenwetter, the son of the late Paul and Clara (Steg) Huber. He married Kathleen Kamke on Aug. 25, 1951, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schofield. She survives.

Rod grew up in Kronenwetter, with the Bull Junior Creek in his back yard. He was in the National Guard from 1947 to 1958. He started his forty-four-year career at the Mosinee Mill in 1948, working in both the Machine and the Finishing Rooms.

He loved family, and after marrying Kathleen “Katie” Kamke in 1951, they enjoyed spending hours at his parent's home, and with his sister's families. Eventually Rod and Katie bought his family's cottage on Bear Lake in Hazelhurst, remodeled it, and spent over twenty wonderful retirement years living there. Gathering with friends, entertaining family, and watching the sunsets over the lake filled their days.

From hunting the north woods with his Dad, to trips that took him to Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho hunting elk with friends, Rod enjoyed the sport. The beautiful Hazelhurst area provided hours of outdoor fun, snowmobiling, fishing, and pontoon boating.

Music and rhythm were in his blood. At an early age Rod learned the drums and took tap dancing lessons. Later in life his excellent dance skills found him and Katie twirling on local dance floors. Rod's musical interests led him to the stumpf-fiddle and he became a local celebrity playing both solo and with bands. His expertise with the fiddle took him to making and selling them, building a nationwide customer base.

Rod and Katie's wedding day was the start of a union that lasted sixty-six years, and saw her lovingly caring for him in his last days.

Survivors, besides his wife, Kathleen, include a brother in law, Merlyn Kamke, Schofield, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters; Lenore Huber, Joan Masgay, and Bette Kitzerow, and one brother; Donald Huber.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017, St. Peter Lutheran Church, Schofield, 1351 Grand Ave. The Rev. Walter Davidson and Rev. Jeffrey Mahnke will officiate. Burial will be in Mosinee Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Schofield. Visitation will be again from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Beste Funeral Home, Mosinee, is assisting the family with arrangements.
