It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of F. William Schlatterer (90), who departed this life on Monday, May 19th, at Vantage Health and Rehab of Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Born on September 5, 1934, to the late Fred and Stella (Zdrojowy) Schlatterer of Mosinee, Wisconsin, Bill lived a life marked by deep commitment and love for his family and community.
Bill shared a long and loving marriage with Nancy Jane Schuetze, whom he wed on February 19, 1955, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Together, they built a life full of cherished memories including traveling the state of Maine and especially enjoying their time at Boothbay Harbor. Sadly, he lost his life-long companion on June 20, 1996.
He was born and raised in the small town of Mosinee, Wisconsin, where he spent his formative years. After completing his primary education, he graduated from Wausau High School in 1952. This milestone marked the beginning of a path filled with service and dedication to his country and community.
Shortly after graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1952. His service spanned eight years, concluding in 1960. During his tenure, he spent 8 months stationed in Cuba, a period that left a lasting impression on him. On a Naval team, he played organized baseball making these months in Cuba some of the most cherished of his young adult life.
In an era when college education was not as accessible as it is today, individuals like Bill took a different path toward success. With determination and a keen sense of self-improvement, Bill carved out a remarkable career for himself, becoming a pivotal force in enhancing the efficiency and productivity of various businesses.
Bill had a successful career in inventory control and sales service management, working at various companies like Crestline Millwork and Marathon Millwork. In 1974, he and Nancy moved to Old Orchard Beach, Maine to work for New England Homes. He also ventured into community service, serving as a town councilman, chairman, and interim town manager in Old Orchard Beach. During his tenure, his eye was always toward the improvement of the community while being fiscally responsible. He continued his career as a purchasing and inventory manager for Nappi Distributors in Gorham, ME.
After his Navy discharge, he joined the American Legion, marking a new chapter of community service. He quickly became active in the Legion, embracing its mission to support veterans and promote patriotism, taking on significant community projects. Through the American Legion, he successfully raised $10,000 for CPR dummies that were needed in Old Orchard Beach, enhancing community safety and preparedness. His leadership led to his election as Commander and Officer of Post 57, where he guided activities and upheld Legion values. He managed a profitable parking facility, showcasing his business skills and supporting the Legion's initiatives. He enjoyed running the bingo hall in Old Orchard Beach with his friend Mike, creating a welcoming community hub. He tirelessly supported veterans, fostered community spirit, and left a lasting impact on Old Orchard Beach through his commitment to service.
Bill leaves behind a legacy of love, family and friends. He is survived by his son Jeffery, Wausau, grandson Tyler (Annika) Schlatterer, Franklinton, North Carolina, a nephew and several nieces. Besides his wife Nancy, Bill was preceded in death by his daughter, Nanlynn; his brother, James Schlatterer; his sister, Virginia Kohl; and daughter-in-law Mary Schlatterer.
Jeff would like to extend his deepest gratitude to a truly cherished friend, Mike Filosa. The friendship between Mike and Bill was one of those rare connections, often described as being "peas in a pod" or "thick as thieves." When Bill's health began to fail, Mike was there in every way possible. His support was unwavering, and he proved to be the most dependable and honorable friend one could ask for. Jeff is profoundly thankful for Mike's kindness, loyalty, and the honor he has brought into their lives through his friendship with Bill. His actions have left an indelible mark on his heart, and for that, he is eternally grateful.
A private memorial service will be held at a future date. Beste Funeral Home, Mosinee, is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.bestefh.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations made in Bill’s name should be directed to American Legion, Post 57, Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
