Charles Jacob Duberstein

July 13, 1923 — May 5, 2024

Peplin

At the age of 100, Charles "Chuck" J. Duberstein, Peplin, died on May 5, 2024, at Ascension St. Claire Hospital, surrounded by loved ones.

Chuck was born on July 13, 1923, in Guenther, WI, the son of the late John and Hazel (Williams) Duberstein. He married Margaret Hotchkiss on December 9, 1950, in Mosinee; she survives.

At 17, Chuck joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1945, he was drafted and served for two years before re-enlisting in the Army with the Company C 385th Military Police Service Battalion. He served during WWII in Germany until the war ended. He was a lifetime member of the Peplin VFW Post 8280. Chuck was a true patriot and loved his country.

After returning home, he met and married Margaret, and they soon started a family. Chuck began working at Log and Timber Company, which later became Mosinee Paper Mill, retiring after 36 years.

Chuck was an avid trout fisherman, woodworker, and hunter. He loved playing shuffleboard as a young man and having a hobby farm. But most of all, he’ll always be remembered by many as the “Nightcrawler Guy” picking and selling them with his wife for over 50 years.

Charles is survived by his wife, Margaret; his children, Charles (Patricia) Duberstein, Joanne (Van Lee) Richey, Michael (Laurie) Duberstein, Lisa (Timm) Dupuis, Gerald (Lhyn) Taylor, his son-in-Law Terry Traska; 9 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Julius Duberstein, William (Carol) Duberstein, and Carol Jean (Dale) Hintze, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Charles was preceded in death by a daughter, Bonnie Traska, and 9 siblings.

A gathering of family and friends, to celebrate Chuck's life, will take place at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at the Peplin VFW Post 8280, Hwy 153 East, Peplin.  Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service and flag presentation, all at VFW Post 8280.
